Income Tax Calculator
Estimate income tax and take-home pay by country from gross income, using simplified brackets — an educational estimate, not tax advice.
How do I use the income tax calculator?
- Choose a Country: United States, United Kingdom, India, Canada or Australia. The currency changes to match.
- Enter your Annual Gross Income, your total yearly income before tax.
- If you have them, add Additional Deductions. The country’s standard deduction, allowance or credit is already included, so enter only extra amounts.
- Read the Tax Breakdown by Bracket and the Tax Summary: total deductions, taxable income, total income tax, effective rate, and annual and monthly take-home pay.
Results update as you type, and you can save or share a scenario.
How do tax brackets work?
The calculator uses progressive brackets. Your taxable income is split into bands, and each band is taxed at its own rate.
Moving into a higher bracket doesn’t raise the tax on all your income. Only the part above the threshold is taxed at the higher rate; everything below it is taxed exactly as before. In this model, earning more never leaves you with less after income tax.
What does the calculator show for $75,000?
This is what the calculator shows for the United States at $75,000 gross income (its starting value) with no additional deductions. It uses IRS brackets and the $16,100 standard deduction for a single filer, federal income tax only. It’s a simplified model, so your result will differ.
Taxable income = $75,000 − $16,100 = $58,900
| Band | Rate | Tax |
|---|---|---|
| $0 – $12,400 | 10% | $1,240.00 |
| $12,400 – $50,400 | 12% | $4,560.00 |
| $50,400 – $58,900 | 22% | $1,870.00 |
- Total income tax: 1,240 + 4,560 + 1,870 = $7,670.00
- Effective rate: 7,670.00 ÷ 75,000 = 10.23%
- Marginal rate: 22%, the top band reached
- Take-home pay: 75,000 − 7,670.00 = $67,330.00 a year, about $5,610.83 a month

What is the difference between effective and marginal tax rate?
Your marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar of taxable income: the highest band in the breakdown. Your effective rate is total income tax divided by gross income, which the calculator shows under Total Income Tax.
In the example, the marginal rate is 22% but the effective rate is 10.23%, because most income falls in lower bands and the standard deduction isn’t taxed.
The calculator doesn’t show the marginal rate separately; read it from the top band in the breakdown.
Income tax calculator FAQs
How accurate is this tax calculator?
It uses simplified models of each country’s current brackets, with the deduction, allowance, rebate or credit named in its label, such as the $16,100 US standard deduction. Actual tax can differ with filing status, other credits, state or provincial tax, and payroll taxes. This is an educational estimate, not a filing.
Are state or provincial taxes included?
No. The estimate is a simplified federal-style model. US state tax, Canadian provincial tax, and similar local taxes are not included.
What is the difference between effective and marginal tax rate?
The marginal rate is the bracket on your last dollar of taxable income. The effective rate is total income tax divided by gross income, which is lower with progressive brackets.
How is this different from the sales tax calculator?
This page estimates income tax and take-home pay from gross income. To add or remove sales tax on a price, use the sales tax calculator at /calculators/sales-tax.
Which countries does this income tax calculator cover?
The United States, the United Kingdom, India, Canada and Australia. Choosing a country switches the brackets, deduction, allowance or credit, and currency. Each country is a simplified model of income tax only, so treat the result as an estimate and check the official tax authority.
