How do I use the tip calculator?

  1. Enter the bill amount.
  2. Tap a preset (10%, 15%, 18%, 20% or 25%) or type a rate in Custom Tip %.
  3. Enter the number of people in Split Between.
  4. Read the tip and total, plus the amount and tip per person when splitting.

Results update as you type. Include Sales Tax is optional (see below).

What is the tip formula?

With B = bill, t = tip percentage and N = number of people:

  • Tip = B × t ÷ 100
  • Total = B + tip
  • Per person = total ÷ N

Worked example: an $80 bill, a 20% tip, split between 4 people.

  • Tip = 80 × 20 ÷ 100 = $16.00
  • Total = 80 + 16 = $96.00
  • Per person = 96 ÷ 4 = $24.00 (of which $4.00 is tip)

The calculator gives the same results.

Tip and total on a $50 bill
Tip %TipTotal
10%$5.00$55.00
15%$7.50$57.50
18%$9.00$59.00
20%$10.00$60.00
25%$12.50$62.50

How much should you tip?

There’s no single right answer. Customs vary by country and type of service. In some places a tip is expected; in others, service is included in prices and tipping is optional.

If you’re unsure, check the bill for a service charge or look up local guidance. The presets are shortcuts, not recommendations.

Should you tip before or after tax?

Either works; it’s your choice.

  • Before tax: leave Include Sales Tax unticked and enter the pre-tax subtotal. The total shown excludes tax, so add it from your receipt.
  • After tax: tick Include Sales Tax and enter the rate. Tax is added to the bill first, then the tip is worked out on that subtotal.

Example: $80 bill, 8% tax ($6.40), 20% tip. Before tax: tip $16.00, you pay $102.40. After tax: tip is 20% of $86.40 = $17.28, total $103.68.

For tax on its own, use the sales tax calculator.

How do you split the bill?

The calculator splits the total evenly and shows each person’s share of the tip.

If orders differ a lot, each person can pay for their own items and share only the tip, using the tip-per-person figure.

Results are shown to the cent, with no automatic rounding: $100 split 3 ways shows $33.33 each ($99.99 in all), so someone adds a cent.

Tip calculator FAQs

How do I calculate a 15%, 18% or 20% tip?

Multiply the bill by the percentage and divide by 100. On a $60 bill, 15% is 60 × 15 ÷ 100 = $9.00, 18% is $10.80 and 20% is $12.00. Add the tip to the bill for the total, or tap the matching preset above.

Should I tip on the total before or after tax?

There’s no universal rule, and the difference is usually small. Tipping on the pre-tax amount gives a slightly lower tip than tipping after tax. To tip after tax here, tick Include Sales Tax and enter the rate; leave it unticked to tip on the amount you enter.

How do I split a tip between several people?

Enter the number of people in Split Between. The calculator divides the total evenly and shows each person’s share of the tip. A $16.00 tip on an $80 bill split four ways is $4.00 each, or $24.00 per person including the bill.

Is a gratuity the same as a tip?

The words are often used interchangeably. On a bill, though, a “gratuity” or “service charge” line can mean an amount the business has already added. Check your receipt so you don’t tip twice. To leave something extra, enter that percentage above.
